Captain Joseph May Magill

 

 

Joseph May Magill was born in Co. Down around 1863.

He served as a civil veterinary surgeon in the Boer War.

On 11 June 1904 he was appointed veterinary-lieutenant to the North of Ireland Imperial Yeomanry. He remained in the position when the regiment became the North Irish Horse in July 1908. On 5 June 1912 he resigned his commission.

On 6 August 1914 Magill was appointed captain in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, and served in the Egyptian Theatre from 10 September that year. He took part in the operations on the Gallipoli Peninsula, where he received a leg wound.

He resigned his commission on 27 June 1919.

He died on 15 October 1931 at 5 Claremont Street, Belfast.

 

Magill was uncle to Robert Magill, who was attached to the North Irish Horse as medical officer from 1909 to 1914.
